No thumbnail image/og image shows up for my website when sharing

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help. When I share the link to the latest website I created, no thumbnail image comes up at all. This is the case everywhere - sharing via SMS, Whatsapp, Facebook, etc. - it's not a local issue to Facebook, as other people seem to experience.

I've read the advice in these two threads and tried various things but they haven't worked:

https://community.weebly.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/SEO/thread-id/495/page/8

https://community.weebly.com/t5/How-Do-I-In-the-Community/How-do-I-change-the-picture-that-displays-...

I used a Weebly template that has one image filling the left of the page. There are no other images on the pages (only the one image at the left on each page). I created a hidden page with an additional image on it, in the header field, and used this page in the og tag (see below).

I added the following coding in Settings/SEO/Header Code relating to that hidden page's image:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.wildsmithpsychotherapy.co.uk/image.html"/>
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">

I also tried adding this to the header code field of the hidden Image page itself:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.wildsmithpsychotherapy.co.uk/uploads/1/2/4/2/124206080/published/alanwildsmiththerapy.jp...>

Have I done something incorrectly? Any suggestions what to do?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @WBdesign. It looks like you have pasted the page url instead of the image url. Try adding this instead:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.wildsmithpsychotherapy.co.uk/uploads/1/2/4/2/124206080/published/alanwildsmiththerapy.jp..."/>

D'oh, thank you. I had the correct URL in the header field of the page itself, but not in the main SEO settings. Fixed.

Hi, I just created a site and I have no idea how to make an image appear when posting the link on other sites. I keep reading that you should insert code into the header code but there is no place on the template editor to do so - I can't figure out how to access the code.

Any help would be appreciated. www.alaskaforbernie.com

Try adding a regular image to your home page, @malena. If you do that and use an image that is at least 200 pixels by 200 pixels, then it should get picked up by Facebook and other services.

You'll need to scrape new info once you do this, too: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/sharing/?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.alaskaforbernie.com

Hey Adam, thanks for responding. The page does have .jpg images, and I just added another and scraped again. The scraper says I need to have data in the og:image section and I am unable to edit that with the theme I chose and I'm unable to change the theme. This is a pretty disappointing way to launch a website and I'm considering changing platforms.

Oh, I see why it isn't picking it up. The editor experience you have doesn't yet automatically add the tags based on images you added. Try doing the following:

1. Go to Website > Site Settings, and add this code to your header code found there:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://images.editor.website/uploads/b/b98abf00-84a9-11e9-8683-d3ec8cfd06b1/stickers.jpg?width=400" />

2. Publish your site again

3. Use the link above to scrape new info from Facebook. They should be able fo find the meta tag and use the image.

This is back in 2019. Does this answer still apply, because I can't find Site Setting (is it general settings?) and I don't have an option there to put in the meta tag data. I have tried in the SEO section, but the code doesn't show in the <head> section when I publish.

You have the newer site editor, @midapa, so the process is a little different. Also, I think the link in the code from my quote is wrong because it links to an image in the editor and not on the live site. Is this a particular page you want to do this with or your whole site?

I just want an image (my logo) to appear as a thumbnail whenever I share the link to my site. Right now its a broken link image or nothing. Not great for promoting my brand.

Oh, and I am using this code:
<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.drachenspiel.ca/uploads/b/0cf1fb30-577a-11ea-83be-7b4bc1576967/DrachenSpiel_NoMP3D.png" />

It seems like it should be working now from what I see with Facebook's debug tool:

Hello, I am running into a simiar issue. The picture I chose to put into my page header is not showing as a thumbnail as well. I have used the scraper / facebook debugger and it say my image is too small, but it clearly is not. Opening the picture in paint shows way over 200 x 200 pix. I have made other thumbnails appear on my site with pictures used in my blog, but I am wanting to use my header now as a thumbnail.

Hi @Romanvr Facebook cannot read header or background images. Did you use an image on a different page on your site?

It doesn't look very good If I don't use the header and instead insert it as image. It really need it to look like the header due to the background faded picture as well. Is it possible at all?

Can't you change the Header code to make sure facebook picks up the header picture?

It's not on our end, @Romanvr. However, you can add an image to a hidden page and use the same code (with the respective image url) to achieve the same result. What image are you trying to use?

Okay, great. Here's what you'll want to do:

1. Open the editor and click Pages, then add a new page titled "image" or whatever you want to call it. Make sure to check the box to make it hidden.

2. Upload the image to the page and publish the site.

3. Navigate to the live site and find your hidden page. The easiest way to do this is to edit the url to include the hidden page name. i.e. yoursite.com/image.html

4. Right click on the image and copy the image address.

5. Go back to the editor and add the image og code to Settings>SEO>Header, making sure to copy/paste the image url into the meta property og image code.

6. Save the changes and publish again.

7. Visit the Facebook Debugger tool and scrape the url until the image shows up.

Edit: I just realized the image is on your About Us page. You can skip right down to step 5 and copy/paste this:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.equilibriasupplements.ca/uploads/1/2/5/3/125312640/lavender-4222480-480_orig.jpg" />

Hi! This was helpful for my blog pages however, it didn't work for my home page. Is there a different code for my home page? My site is www.tastefilledtravel.com. Thank you!
