Are the first Gen ipads compatible with mobile card readers?

Hello, I am trying to figure out if any of the square credit card readers are compatible with the first generation ipads/ios 5?

Square POS needs iOS9 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/square-point-of-sale-pos/id335393788?mt=8

 

original iPad only updates to iOS 5.1.1

 

So Square will not work on that old of hardware.
