Can a chip reader or dock be plugged directly into the USB port of an Android device and function?

I don't want to use Bluetooth for connecting a chip reader and dock to my Android-based Square POS.  I read where the chip reader can plug directly into older iPads via USB.  Is this also true for Android devices?

Hey @mooseshoes - iPads being used with a Square Stand can connect to the Contactless + Chip Reader through the USB hub that is built into the Stand. Unfortunately, without the Stand both iOS and Android devices require a Bluetooth connection with the Contactless reader.
