Hi I am new to square I just bought a chip reader and slider for my business. I do testing for parts of a water system in houses and commercial buildings. Can I take payment over the phone and can there be a hold on the funds until the service is completed?

yes, you can manually enter a sale on your device with the instructions in the following link. https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/5176-manually-key-in-card-payments-without-the-square-reader

As for placing a hold, there is not that functionality in Square currently. once you charge a card it is charged at that moment.
