What could cause the option to print a receipt to become unavailable?

Sunday, for some reason if a customer paid with a credit card (especially one that we needed to use the chip reader) the option to print a reciept/ticket was not availble.  It wasn't an issue on every order but it was a issue more than just once.  This is a new setup and has only been used about 3 weeks which this was the first time we have had this issue.  Would anyone know what would be causing this problem? If they have a email address already in Square's system from a previous square transaction It may bypass the receipt screen after the sale completes.  You can go into activity and pull up that transaction and then select send receipt and it will bring up the option to enter phone number/ email address/ print reciept.

Thanks for the response. 

The problem with this is, we are utilizing the reciepts as kitchen tickets too.  So if it fails to print, this causes a problem.  Is there anyway to force it to always allow you to print (that is, if that is the case)?

there is a setting that automatically prints reciepts.  It's under settings / printers then there is a Automatically print receipt option.
