301 redirects - http to https

do i need to do a 301 redirect in weebly for a change from http to https for seo purposes ?  Recently took site from checkout only ssl certificate to site wide.  search console is reading all versions of site ?  weebly didn't think it necessary to do a 301 but now I am uncertain.  search of site shows only https version so again uncertainty.  Anyone have a clear answer.  I have read everything I can find which certaily recommends redirects but is this only in a say word press site ?  Any assistance is appreciated.

As well, if i do 301 redirects I can do them for standard pages but cannot see a way to do store pages with any ease, do store pages even need to be done, I could only  send them to the corresponding standard page....any thoughts?

thx

You won't need to do that when you enable SSL - we automatically forward non-HTTPS links to the HTTPS version for you.

Good question - is it necessary to resubmit the Site Map to Google Search Console with the new HTTPS?

Hi Scottmeister,

From a novice but with some recent experience with this.  Make certain to add your https site version to search console (both versions www and non) and form a group within search console that encompasses all four versions of your site (http www and non and https www and non).  This will show you clearly what is happening when you make the change live.  You'll see the decrease of http traffic and the increase of https traffic.  Once that is done then yes submit a new sitemap (google would eventually find it I am told) but I submit sitemaps pretty regularly and think it hastens the process slightly.  Your pages being indexed will decrease greatly at first but you will see a steady incline in pages being indexed or you should if all is a ok.  Make certain to link your new https site with google analytics so that you get accurate data there as well there are two sections within analytics you need to change. You should also do the same with bing if you utilize it though the process is a litle different.

I have seen a decline in organic traffic which is pretty steadily starting to come back (I went live with this on October 23rd).  There is a lot to think about and work thru with this.  Easier if your site is fairly new and small.  If you use social media all your links need to change.   Anybody linking to your site need to be notified also so those links go in direct rather than from a redirect.

The change is good for the long run but in the short term does affect traffic.

Good luck with your transition.  Happy Holidays to You and Please Consider Supporting the Fight To End the Repeal of Net Neutrality.  We Need a Free and Open Internet !

Hi there!

I've also changed only HTTP to HTTPS in weebly settings, added HTTPS version to the Search Console and submitted the sitemap.xml. But, what do you mean by saying:

"Make certain to link your new https site with google analytics so that you get accurate data there as well there are two sections within analytics you need to change."

Accordingly:

1. Do I need to create new property in Analytics or just to change in the Basic Settings of HTTP version the Default URL to be https:// instead of http://?

2. What two sections in Analytics you are thinking of?

And one more question:

Do I need to Fetch as Google the HTTPS version? Will indexing be the problem like will the pages be double indexed?

Thanks a lot!

the auto redirect to https does not seem to work.  I am still on the http, even though SSL has been enabled, and I can access the https version of the site just fine.  However, when I just type in the URL, or go from Google result, it does not redirect to the https version.

Hi there, I am stuck with this too. I've changed my weebly site from http to https. However, SEMRush states that Weebly hasn't automatically redirected for me (see below). So I need to do this manually somehow - Can someone advise please?
