Hello, and welcome!

First off, any edits you make in the editor won't go live until you Publish again, so if you're making changes there, you won't need to take the site down.

If you'd prefer to take it down entirely, however, you'll want to use the Unpublish option in your Settings.

is this the only way you can do it? unpublish? because the problem with that is I can't see what my website looks like either unless I publish it. if this is the case then I'm very disappointed with weebly

The editor itself acts a good preview of your site. Generall speaking, you can leave your live site as it is and make any changes you want in the editor. When everything looks good there, you can finally publish and replace your live site with that.
