You don't have to have a store page, no. You could create a page titled "Store" and list your paintings with the Paypal button. Just keep in mind that the button will redirect people off of your site. If your customers are only ordering 1 thing at a time then this shouldn't be an issue. The store cart function would be more convenient if there were multiple items being purchased at once.
