We recently tried the Square chip reader on an iPhone at the same time as the older strip reader on a same model iPhone. The chip reader was significantly slower. What can be done to speed up the chip reader?

Lots have been done lately to speed it up. My chip transactins are only about 3-5 seconds now. It definitely does depend on your internet connection though. You can also now remove the card as soon as it beeps, no need to wait until after the signature screen anymore.

Yep, we're always working to make it faster with each update. Generally speaking, chip transactions are bit more complicated that magstripe ones, so it's expected that it'll be a bit slower.

Like @Redlight2015 said, it should still only be a couple seconds, so long as your connection is strong @Datamanger. Aside from that, you'll want to ensure you have the latest version of the app, and your device is running the latest software. Hope that helps!
